Juries play a central role in our justice system, yet research shows that jurors are influenced by a range of cognitive biases and extra-legal factors. This raises an important question: are juries still the best option in a 21st century courtroom?

In this talk, Dr Lee Curley will explore how jurors make decisions by examining both the weaknesses and strengths of the jury system. On one hand, issues such as cognitive biases and the persistence of myths can undermine fairness. On the other hand, having fifteen randomly selected citizens, each bringing different beliefs and experiences, can be a real strength.

In addition, during the talk, potential alternatives (i.e., judge only trials) to the jury system and methods of reform will be assessed. The aim of this talk is not to provide final answers, but to spark debate and engage the audience in the fascinating intersection of psychology and law.
